Nodding trillium grows in shady, moist habitats such as hardwood forests, hardwood or conifer swamps, wet swales in upland forests, or by shady springs or seepages. It grows on moist, loam soil or on black, organic soil. The flower is on a straight or curved stalk, and hangs below the leaves.
